From the driver’s seat to clear sight: how a taxi ride led to an eye test

On that morning, my day began like many others. The destination was familiar, the mission routine, but the experience turned out to be anything but ordinary.

In my role as programme officer for a refractive error project in Kenya, I was supporting the Nairobi County Department of Health and the Mbagathi County Referral Hospital team at an eye health outreach event in Kibera Sub-County. And, as usual, I was picked up by Michael, a jovial and engaging taxi driver whose curiosity and humour have become a constant companion on my outreach days.

Like many drivers navigating Nairobi’s busy roads daily, Michael relies heavily on his eyesight. Yet, like many people, he had quietly adapted to vision challenges without realising help was within reach. Michael’s failing eyesight had already forced him to change profession from tailoring to driving.

As we drove towards Kibera, Michael asked about my work and what had brought us there that day. I casually explained that the luggage in his boot contained assorted eye drops and reading spectacles for a community eye screening outreach. That simple explanation struck a chord.

With laughter, Michael shared how his children often tease him when he struggles to read messages on his phone. He recalled how he recently pricked his fingers while competing with them to pass a thread through the eye of a needle; an experience he had dismissed as an unavoidable sign of ageing.

Sensing a familiar story, I encouraged him to take advantage of the outreach and have his eyes checked. Though initially joking and slightly sceptical, Michael agreed.

Upon arrival, he joined the queue and, being among the first attendees, was attended to in just 20 minutes. When he emerged from the screening area, his reaction said it all. Smiling broadly, he held a pair of reading glasses; astonished that what he had blamed on age was, in fact, an easily correctable refractive error.

For Michael, a simple eye exam restored more than clarity of sight. It renewed confidence in his daily work and personal life. For me, it was a powerful reminder that basic healthcare services can transform lives in the most unexpected ways.

Sometimes, impact doesn’t begin in clinics or boardrooms. Sometimes, it starts in the front seat of a taxi; with a conversation, a shared laugh, and a clearer view of what’s possible.

All I needed was a simple pair of readers. Today, I can finally see clearly again.
